When Daniel asked me to write a story for Oceans I was gung-ho until I remembered that I live in the Midwest and have only been to the east or west coast of the U.S. a handful of times. I’m not a scientist, so tackling climate change or some other hard science issue seemed like too tall of an order for me. Eventually I settled on the idea of Aquagenic Urticaria. The water allergy is a real thing, but I definitely treated Cora’s condition a little differently than real life. I went down a lot of rabbit holes before I settled on this story line, but the idea that this woman couldn’t be in water and couldn’t remember her own life had shades of the story of The Little Mermaid as well.
